🌿Faith Before Curriculum: Inviting God Into Our Homeschool Days

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” — Proverbs 16:3

đź’« Intro

It’s easy to think homeschooling success depends on having the perfect curriculum or color-coded planner — but what if it starts with something simpler?

What if it begins with prayer?

When I finally put faith before curriculum, everything changed. Our lessons became lighter, our hearts calmer, and our homeschool days started feeling more like worship than work.

🌸 In the Beginning

I decided to start homeschooling in 2019 when I was pregnant with my second son, James, and my first son, Sean, was in first grade.

Sean’s biological father had just passed away, and he was struggling — both emotionally and academically. He’d been getting into fights at school and having a hard time focusing. As a mom, it broke my heart to see him hurting and falling behind.

I had no teaching experience, no plan, and no idea what I was doing. I just knew that my son needed something different — a slower pace, a softer space, and a whole lot of grace.

So, I decided to take things into my own hands.

We began homeschooling through a local program that provided curriculum — the same one his public school used. Looking back, that was the perfect starting point for us. It gave me structure, confidence, and time to find our rhythm.

✏️ Getting Into a Groove

Once we found our flow, Sean started to soar. We passed the public school’s pace quickly, and he learned more in one homeschool year than he had in the classroom.

A few years later, we joined a private Christian homeschool program. That’s when faith began to take deeper root in our family. We started attending church regularly, doing family devotionals, and learning about God together.

But our curriculum still felt messy. I was piecing together random books from Barnes & Noble and using whatever was affordable. It was confusing and overwhelming.

Even in that chaos, the one thing that always felt right was our time with God.

📚 Searching for the Right Curriculum

At one point, I was told about Abeka and other Christian curricula, but many were expensive or had mixed reviews.

Then one night, during a long research session, I came across The Good and the Beautiful.

I truly believe God led me to it.

This curriculum has been such a blessing. It’s beautiful, easy to follow, and keeps God at the center of our homeschool. Every lesson feels intentional and rooted in faith — exactly what our hearts needed.

🌦️ When Things Don’t Go as Planned

I’m naturally an organized person who loves structure and a good plan. I like physical books, handwritten lists, and checked-off boxes.

So when our homeschool days didn’t go according to plan, I used to get stressed. It took time — and encouragement from other homeschool moms — to realize that it’s okay to have off days.

That’s actually one of the blessings of homeschooling.

Some days are for art, others for rest, movies, or museum visits. Even grocery shopping, meal planning, and cleaning together count as lessons — teaching our kids life skills, teamwork, and gratitude.

If your day looks “off schedule,” that’s okay. It’s still a day full of love, learning, and grace.

✝️ Following God’s Plan

Each morning, we begin our homeschool with a family devotional and prayer. It sets the tone for our day and helps us remember who we’re doing this for.

Fridays are what my kids call our “easy days.” We’ll watch a faith-based movie, talk about Scripture, and spend extra time together as a family.

Through this journey, I’ve learned something beautiful:
God doesn’t expect perfection — He desires presence.

As moms, we can be so hard on ourselves. We compare, criticize, and carry guilt that God never intended for us to carry. But ask yourself — would Jesus ever tell you:

“You’re not enough. You’re not doing enough. You’re failing.”

Of course not.

He whispers instead:

“You are loved. You are chosen. You are enough.”

So stop that stinkin’ thinkin’, mama. You are doing an amazing job. Your kids are happy, healthy, loved, and learning about God — and that’s what truly matters.

Keep putting faith before curriculum, and watch how God blesses your homeschool days in ways you never imagined.

With love and grace,
